Run.GPS Trainer UV Pro

*All app reviews at RunningDigital.com receive updates as new app versions are released. No review is ever finished, rather I attempt to provide you with a current window to the developer’s products and services. Every day a different app here is used for testing in real training conditions. The testing queue is actually a loop, and whenever possible, the latest sessions are embedded on their respective pages. Thanks for reading!*
Works with sensors:Zephyr HxM, Polar WearLink+ Bluetooth, FRWD B (discontinued). Portal works with Withings wireless scales.
Testing notes:
The first two sessions with Run.GPS’s Trainer UV Pro this month experienced crashes (forced closes) when attempting to upload each session to GPS-sport.net. Immediately following the forced closes, the app opens again with texts missing. To fix, I rebooted the handset and was able to see and navigate all menus again of Trainer UV Pro. Forced closing in version 2.3.9 continues to occur when uploading a recently finished session.

Preliminary assessment: Minor technical difficulties aside, Trainer UV Pro is the standard-bearer for mobile sports tracking apps. No other app can do what this one can. It may cost more than anything else in this category (40 euro) but the cost is justified with seemingly unlimited configurability. Trainer UV Pro is the only sports tracking app which can stand up to and beat the traditional monitors. Run.GPS ordering website
Criticism: Probably wont appeal to the new app generation for a couple of reasons. For one, Trainer UV Pro’s menus and transitions are old school. The entire experience feels dated. Another reason it may not appeal to newer generations is the learning curve is a bit steep. If you want to set up interval training, this app allows the best configurations, but you WILL need to read the user manual to get the job done.TrainerUVManual_2.3.9
Final thoughts: In my expert opinion, Trainer UV Pro provides a sports technology solution better than most traditional monitors. It has the potential for a lot more as the app gets better with each update and as more sensors (Zephyr, Polar, Withings, etc) become compatible. Run.GPS was the first mobile sports technology solution and remains the best featured to date. This app matches well with seasoned athletes who are familiar with sports technology systems and require the best possible suite of training analysis tools for expert logging and coaching assessments.
